How to specify a paper machine press felt
Press felt selection starts with the paper grade and the duty of the individual press position. A pick-up felt, top felt and bottom felt can require different water-handling capacity, surface finish and mechanical stability, even on the same machine.
- Paper and furnishProvide the paper grade, basis-weight range, recycled or virgin pulp content, and any fillers or additives.
- Press positionIdentify the felt position, press layout, roll diameters, nip load or line pressure, and whether a shoe press is used.
- Conditioning and dimensionsConfirm finished loop length and width, operating speed, vacuum levels, showers and cleaning arrangements.

Are all press felts suitable for every paper grade?
No. Tissue, packaging paper, printing paper and pulp board place different demands on sheet support, water handling and surface quality. Start with the relevant application page and confirm the conditions of the specific press position.

How are felt construction and permeability selected?
Base-fabric construction, batt arrangement, mass per unit area, caliper and initial air permeability are considered together with nip load, furnish, vacuum and cleaning. These parameters should be confirmed for the actual position rather than copied from another machine.

What is the difference between endless and seamed press felts?
An endless felt is supplied as a closed loop. A seamed felt is closed during installation using its designed seam system. Confirm which installation type your machine requires before requesting a quotation.
