How to choose a paper machine forming fabric
A forming fabric, also called a forming wire, supports the fiber suspension while water drains through the forming section. The objective is to balance sheet formation, fiber support, drainage and fabric durability for the actual furnish and former.
- Sheet requirementsState the paper grade, basis-weight range, formation target and acceptable wire marking.
- Furnish and drainageDescribe fiber type, recycled content, fines and fillers, drainage behavior and vacuum arrangement.
- Former and running conditionsProvide the former type, machine speed, operating tension, contact elements and cleaning equipment.
- Fabric specificationConfirm length, width, existing weave, yarn sizes, caliper and permeability, together with the reason for changing the fabric.

Which forming fabric structures are available?
The product range includes single layer, 1.5 layer, double layer, 2.5 layer and triple layer SSB forming fabrics. Their paper-side support, drainage arrangement and wearing surface differ. Use the structure pages to compare these features.

Does a denser paper-side surface always improve performance?
Additional support points can benefit fiber support and reduce marking, but yarn arrangement also changes drainage and cleanliness. Surface fineness should be assessed together with the stock and dewatering conditions.

Can the fabric be selected by machine speed alone?
No. Actual speed is one factor. Furnish, paper grade, former design, drainage profile, tension and abrasion conditions also determine whether a structure fits the position.
